Mobile phone users must now consider the dangers of radiation levels when deciding what cellular phones to purchase.

When buying a cellular phone, most consumers look at features, cost, and what is newest in the technology field. Radiation level in mobile phones are just the most recent concern that consumers need to research before deciding on what is considered to be not only the newest, coolest phone, but also the safest.

Cell Phones Link to Cancer and Tumors

In the USA Today article “Cellphone Radiation Levels Vary Widely, Watchdog Report Says," Leslie Cauley states “scientific evidence to date has not been able to make a hard link between cancer and cellphones.” Concerns are abound, though, because “recent studies find significantly higher risks for brain and salivary gland tumors among people using cell phones for 10 years or longer,” according to Jane Houlihan, associated with the Environmental Working Group, the group who conducted the radiation level study.

Although there are varying opinions on the link between cell phones and dangerous effects of radiation on the human brain, nearly all groups agree that the safest bet is to steer away from the phones with the highest radiation levels and toward the devices that rank the lowest.

Top 10 Radiation Level Phones in the Study

Not all phones were covered in the study, although over 1,000 were. Of the phones that were covered, the following ten were found to have the highest levels of radiation, ranked from worst and decreasing in radiation levels from there:

Radiation Levels of 1.55 W/kg:

  • Motorola Moto VU204, Verizon Wireless
  • Kyocera Jax S1300, Virgin Mobile
  • T-Mobile MyTouch 3G, T-Mobile

Radiation Levels of 1.54 W/kg:

  • Motorola W385, US Cellular, Verizon Wireless
  • BlackBerry Curve 8330, Sprint, US Cellular, Metro PCS, Verizon

Radiation Levels of 1.53 W/kg

  • T-Mobile Shadow, T-Mobile
  • Motorola i335, Sprint
  • Motorola C290, Sprint, Kajeet

Radiation Levels of 1.52 W/kg

  • Motorola Moto VE240, Metro PCS, Cricket

Radiation Levels of 1.51 W/kg

  • Blackberry Curve 8300, T-Mobile, AT&T

Lowest 10 Radiation Levels In Cellular Phones

Although any form of radiation level in a cell phone may seem dangerous, these ten phones have the lowest levels in the study:

Radiation Levels Between .30 and .40

  • Samsung Impression SGH-a877, AT&T
  • Motorola RAZR V8, Cellular One
  • Samsung SGH-t229, T-Mobile

Radiation Levels Between .41 and .50

  • Samsung Rugby SGH-a837, AT&T
  • Samsung Propel Pro SGH-i627, AT&T
  • Samsung Gravity SGH-t459, Cellular One, T-Mobile
  • T-Mobile Sidekick, T-Mobile

Radiation Levels Between .51 and .60

  • LGXenon GR500, AT&T
  • Sanyo Katana II, Kajeet
  • Motorola Karma QA1, AT&T

FCC Regulations and Cell Phone Radiation Resources

Currently radiation level information is not required by the FCC to be divulged by cell phone makers. Certain popular phones, according to Cauley, such as the Blackberry Pearl Flip 8230 and Motorola KZRZ are not listed in the group’s study. For a complete listing of how the cell phones in the study ranked, visit the Environmental Working Group’s website.

In India pollution created by Mobile phone tower radiations, for the first time, was identified by Santosh Kumar Bagla of Karmajyot Seva Trust of Gujarat who approached the Supreme Court of India way back in August 2005. Though the SC took prompt action initially but thanks to the slow speed of Indian judicial system, the PIL filed in 2005 is still pending some clarifications from the Government of India as asked by the supreme court in its last hearing in 2007. In the meantime, the issue of mushrooming tower got messier and messier and finally the war between social organizations and the rich mobile operators’ lobby reach its peak and as done in many other countries, this rich body managed to get the guidelines of its benefit issued by the Government of India. This itself shows how the nexus between mobile manufacturers’ body and the government works…. The government delayed reply to Supreme Court and in the meantime issued highly illogical guidelines grossly favoring the rich manufacturers and operators lobby.
